Rep. Miller Statement Marking Our Independence Day
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement on the upcoming Fourth of July:
“On this Fourth of July, Americans from across the nation will gather together to mark 236 years of liberty in this great land. As we celebrate the freedom we all hold dear we can never forget how it was won and protected for more than two centuries. In our Revolution, average citizens stepped forward to join citizen militias to fight against the most powerful army in the world in order to secure the freedom we all enjoy today. Since that time American citizen soldiers have continually stepped forward to preserve our freedom. The descendants of our earliest militias, the Minutemen, are the men and women who serve this nation in the National Guard.
“I want extend my thanks to the men and women of not only the National Guard, but all who serve the cause of freedom in uniform. As we celebrate with picnics, barbeques, parades, and fireworks we can never forget that many who serve continue to stand a post on battlefields across the globe to protect our hard won freedom. Let us all keep them in our thoughts and prayers this Independence Day and thank them for all they do to keep us free.
“And let us also never lose sight of what exactly we celebrate on this Fourth of July, the signing of the Declaration of Independence and our founder’s unprecedented statement of freedom for every individual. The second paragraph in the Declaration’s begins with a sentence that is the foundation for the freedom we still enjoy; ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ And to secure that statement of freedom the Declaration concludes with, ‘And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.’ Our nation has never forgotten the meaning of our founding statement and the commitment to freedom has never changed.
