Rep. Miller: Action Must be Taken to Authorize the Construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline Project
It is time to get serious about the energy challenges facing our nation in order to have a safe, secure energy supply for the long-term
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following comments calling on the U.S. Senate and the President to take action and clear the way for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline project:
“Over the last several weeks the people of Michigan have watched as our gas prices have soared well over four dollars per gallon to become among the highest in the nation. It has been suggested that the reason gas prices have spiked is because of the shutdown of a refinery which provides much of the fuel consumed in our state. This is an example of the effects of a government that over regulates and leaves the people of our state and indeed our entire country at the mercy of massive price increases.
“These price increases could be lessened if we seriously tackled our nation’s energy challenges. One need only look at the state of North Dakota which is experiencing an energy and jobs boom because that state has decided it would advantage itself of vast energy resources found on private lands and state lands. As a result unemployment is nearly non-existent in that state and thousands of high paying jobs are going unfilled - just waiting for qualified people to take them. A similar story can be told of places like West Texas and every place where common sense voices have prevailed over the extreme environmentalists who seem bent on holding our economy back along with our energy security.
“The clearest example of the negative impact of the environmental extremists is the fact that the Keystone Pipeline project has not yet been permitted. This project would bring needed energy resources to the American market every day – and provide a secure energy resource for our nation instead of being forced to import from countries like Venezuela, places whose policies run counter to American interests. In addition to helping make our country energy independent, the Keystone Pipeline would create tens of thousands of jobs right here in America.
“This project is supported in every state through which the pipeline will travel and is ready to go. Construction could begin tomorrow if President Obama allowed it happen. But instead of giving the green light to this project which would help lower prices, create jobs and improve our nation’s energy security, President Obama has been bowing down to his extreme environmentalist supporters. That must stop and recently I was proud to vote in favor of a bill in the House that would force the Keystone Pipeline project to be approved, but the United States Senate has failed to take action.
“The people I am so proud to serve are being crushed by over four dollars a gallon gas prices. It is hurting every family’s ability to plan for a summer vacation, take a trip up north or to the lake and to allow our children to enjoy Pure Michigan. It is time to get serious about the energy challenges facing our nation, so we can have a safe, secure energy supply for the long-term. We need an all-of-the-above energy strategy that would create jobs, lower prices, enhance our national security and grow our economy. That is what the people of Michigan want and deserve, and it is time for politics to get out of the way.”
