WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today announced that Bluewater Center for Independent Living based in Port Huron, Michigan has received a $573,084 grant dedicated to assist homeless and at-risk Veterans and their families from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).  Bluewater Center for Independent Living serves as the lead for this a multi-agency partnership with Disability Network of Oakland & Macomb and Disability Network of Wayne County/Detroit and will use this grant funding to support operations in St. Clair, Sanilac, Huron, Tuscola, Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.  Funds will benefit approximately 175 households, over $3,000 per household, and contribute to case management services, housing assistance and follow up services.

“Sincere congratulations to Bluewater Center for Independent Living on receiving this VA grant funding which will aid in furthering the Bluewater Center’s commitment to assist individuals and their families to live independently,” Miller said.  “Americans have made a solemn promise to support our Veterans, our heroes, who have given so much of themselves to our nation.  We must especially make certain that the support is available to those who are homeless or require some form of assisted living.  The staff members who make up Bluewater Center can take pride in their service and their accomplishments in assisting thousands of individuals across our communities.”

Under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, VA is awarding grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low-income Veteran families living in -- or transitioning to -- permanent housing. The SSVF program supports VA’s efforts to prevent at-risk Veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those who have recently fallen into homelessness.  Details about the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program are online at
