Miller Congratulates Military Academy Appointees - Class of 2017

Harrison Township, MI – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today congratulated military academy nominees who have received an offer of appointment to the United States Military, Naval and Air Force Academies.

“This week we celebrate our nation’s birth by coming together to enjoy our rights to liberty and self governance, and we are reminded of all the sacrifices made by those to ensure our freedoms remain.  In honoring those men and women who have stood in defense of our nation, I congratulate these young individuals who will follow in their footsteps in service of our nation.  Mikaila, Christopher, Piper and Kara represent some of Michigan’s best and brightest and I am honored to have nominated them for one of our nation’s service academies,” Miller said.  “Each of these young individuals has shown outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities and an unwavering commitment to our nation.  I join with their families, communities and the entire state of Michigan in expressing how overwhelmingly proud we are of each of these individuals.”

Rep. Miller nominated the following students for academy appointments:
United States Military Academy, West Point
• Mikaila Koenigbauer, Ira Township, MI; Marine City High School Class of 2013
Koenigbauer was her high school’s National Honor Society, Girls Cross-Country Captain and Section Leader in her high school band.
• Christopher Edwards, Brown City, MI; Brown City High School Class of 2010
Edwards served during Operation Enduring Freedom from 2011-2012.  Following his service, he attended the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point.

United States Naval Academy
• Piper Thaler, Metamora, MI; Oxford High School Class of 2013
Thaler was his high school’s Varsity Football Captain, Varsity Lacrosse Captain, Varsity Wrestling and a member of the Political Activism Club.

United States Air Force Academy
• Kara Witgen, Romeo, MI;  Romeo High School Class of 2013
Witgen was a member of her high school’s National Honor Society, Link Crew Leader, and is an Athlete Warrior Gymnast.
