Rep. Miller: Israel has Right to Defend Itself Against Hamas
Washington – Today, U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, issued the following statement on the continued Hamas attacks against Israel in Gaza and Israel:
“Every nation has a right to self defense, including Israel. Over the last several months, Israel has been attacked repeatedly with thousands of rockets fired randomly at civilian targets by the terrorist group Hamas from the Gaza Strip. I know how the United States would respond if any of our neighbors did the same thing; we would vigorously defend ourselves by attacking those who attack us. Why should Israel be any different?
“In the 1970’s, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir said, ‘Peace will come when the Arabs love their children more than they hate us.’ With Hamas terrorists placing innocent Palestinian women and children at sites where missiles targeted for Israeli civilians are stored and fired, it seems that day has sadly not yet arrived for Hamas. The difference between Hamas terrorists and Israel was clearly stated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who earlier this week said, ‘the difference between us: we are using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they're using their civilians to protect their missiles.’
“The fact that so many civilians have become victims in the current conflict is heartbreaking, but there is no moral equivalence between Israel’s legitimate right to self defense and the Hamas terror organization continuing to hide their terror machine behind civilians in order to protect those tools from being destroyed. It is Hamas that puts its own civilians at risk as Israel works to stop the relentless rocket attacks on its citizens. World outrage over the conflict in Gaza should be rightly focused on Hamas terrorists, not Israel.
“If the Palestinian people really want peace and security, they will convince Hamas to end the rocket attacks immediately. Israel does not want war, but it cannot allow its citizens to be continually at risk from ceaseless rocket attacks launched from Gaza. America must continue to stand by our friend and ally Israel as she defends her citizens from those attacks, and we must continue to work to convince the Palestinian people that the only way to live side by side in peace is to choose peace.”
