Rep. Miller Statement on the President's Request to Raise the Nation's Debt Ceiling

Harrison Township, MI – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following comments regarding President Obama’s request to raise the nation’s debt ceiling later this week. Miller said:

“How distressing that the President is once again requesting to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. Fortunately, because of the consistency of the House Republicans’ commitment to restoring fiscal discipline, at least we saw the debate in 2011 change from how much more to spend to how much we can begin to cut. This is a change in the culture of Washington, DC. Passing the Ryan Budget and the balanced budget amendment were two real milestones in this culture change and a way to begin to restore fiscal discipline. Unfortunately, the U.S. Senate never even debated that budget and the balanced budget amendment vote was unable to obtain the constitutionally required amount of votes for passage.

“I sincerely hope that 2012 will bring a renewed spirit of cooperation between the Administration and Congress to at least stop the need for further lifting of the debt ceiling. These levels of deficits and debt cannot continue.”
