Rep. Miller: October 16th - Marks 900 Days Since U.S. Senate has Passed a Budget

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following comments on the U.S. Senate’s lack of action on any pending budgets which are necessary to run our nation in a fiscally responsible manner:

“For the last two years, our nation has run budget deficits in excess of $1.5 trillion that has driven our national debt over $14 trillion and today, the federal government borrows over 40 cents of every dollar it spends. Given this sea of red ink, earlier this year House Republicans passed a budget which makes the difficult decisions necessary that will lead to balancing the federal budget and paying off the federal debt. This is a true path to prosperity for our nation. In contrast, October 16th marks the 900th day since the United States Senate has passed a budget to govern over $3.5 trillion in annual federal spending. After 900 days, it has become abundantly clear that the Senate has decided that it is not their responsibility to inform the American people of their long-term spending plans even though the American people are demanding that Washington take real steps to bring fiscal sanity to the federal government and stop heaping mountains of debt on our children and grandchildren.

“I and my House Republican colleagues will continue to work to give the American people the fiscal sanity they are demanding. The Senate’s failure to pass a budget only adds to the uncertainty in our economy and slows progress toward economic recovery and the creation of new jobs. Hardworking Americans go to work every day to do their part to build this economy. It’s time for the Senate to do their job and pass a budget. ”
