WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, today voiced her concerns regarding the unfulfilled progress with implementing a number of the 9/11 Commission recommendations during a full Homeland Security Committee hearing entitled, “The Attacks of September 11th: Where Are We Today.” Specifically, Miller spoke about her concerns with the lack of progress made in closing the visa and immigration system gaps, a topic she will address in a hearing on September 13th entitled, “Ten Years after 9/11: Can Terrorists Still Exploit our Visa System?”
“During today’s hearing, the witnesses outlined where our nation still has progress to be made with implementing a number of the 9/11 Commission recommendations. One concern I have is where we are lacking in a visa exit process, which is directly effecting our own border security. The importance cannot be stressed enough to have a clear plan forward to fill in the gaps and deal with the hundreds of thousands of visa violations and overstays which are ongoing. Next week, my subcommittee will hold a hearing on this very issue to examine in depth the progress we have made to secure the visa process so that terrorists cannot use legitimate means to enter the country – a process which the department is currently lacking.”
