Miller Statement on Passage of Short-Term Continuing Resolution

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement regarding the U.S. House of Representative’s passage of the second short-term Continuing Resolution (H.J. Res 48), a federal spending cuts and government funding measure. Miller said:

“Today, I voted in favor of a short-term federal spending measure keeping the government funded. Over the last two weeks, we have passed spending measures saving the American taxpayers $10 billion. I remain committed to make the common sense spending cuts that the American people are demanding to get our fiscal house in order. Since the beginning of the year, I have joined my colleagues in the House in putting forward measures to get a handle on unsustainable government spending which threatens our economy and the opportunities available to our children and grandchildren. I supported and the House passed H.R. 1 which would reduce spending by more than $100 billion below the President’s budget request for fiscal year 2011, which unfortunately the U.S. Senate has failed to pass.

“I do not believe the votes will be there if we are faced with passing another short-term continuing resolution, and therefore it is long past time for the Senate and the President to get off the sidelines and join the House in working on a long-term funding bill which makes needed cuts in federal spending and responsibly fund the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year. No longer can they sit idly by, offering no solutions or ideas, and allow this uncertainty to continue which does further damage to our fragile economy. Now is the time for them to join us in getting the job done. ”

H.J.Res.48 includes $6 billion in federal spending cuts and now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
