WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, will hold a hearing to examine how the United States Border Patrol measures operational control of the borders. The hearing titled, Securing our borders – Operational Control and the Path Forward, will examine the U.S Border Patrol’s metrics for obtaining and maintaining operational control, the lack of an agency wide strategy to secure the border and the use of apprehensions to measure control of the border. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, February 15th at 10:00am in 311 Cannon.

Note:
• According to the U.S. Border Patrol, only 1,107 miles of border are under operational control. Of that, only 843 are on the Southern border and 69 on the Northern border.
• A recent Government Accountability Office Report highlighted the vulnerabilities on the Northern Border, pointing out that despite spending nearly $3 billion in its efforts to interdict and investigate illegal northern border activity in fiscal year 2010; few northern border miles had reached an acceptable level of security.
