Miller Statement on Passage of $100 Billion in Spending Cuts

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following comments regarding the U.S. House of Representative’s passage of the measure (H.R.1) which cuts $100 billion in federal spending for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2011. Miller said:

“I was proud to be a member of the committee last fall who drafted our Pledge to America. In developing the Pledge, we listened to the American people and promised to represent their voices, their values and their priorities. One of the important promises we made in the Pledge was that we would show our commitment to fiscal responsibility by cutting spending by at least $100 billion this year. In passing this continuing resolution, which cuts more than $100 billion in federal spending from this year’s federal budget, we have kept that promise. The American people can trust that we will continue to deliver on the priorities we put forward and will work to return fiscal sanity to the federal government.

“It is simply immoral to continue burying our children, grandchildren and future generations under a mountain of debt that limits their opportunities and ability to achieve the American Dream. We will continue to work on policies that aid our fragile economy and allow American job providers to grow and create the new job opportunities that are so desperately needed in this nation. Hard choices must be made, but one thing is for certain – we will not let the out-of-control spending continue.

“I am also proud of the process with which the House considered this legislation. I commend Speaker Boehner and the House leadership for allowing all members of both parties to participate fully in the debate and to offer amendments to this bill, both of which had been sadly lacking under the previous leadership in the House. The American people can fully rely on the continued use of this type of open and transparent government that will only make our democratic process stronger.

“We have taken this important first step and now it is incumbent on the United States Senate and President Obama to follow our lead. The American people have had enough of a government that spends too much and borrows too much, putting our economic recovery at greater risk. It is my fervent hope that they have also heard the call of the American people to make the hard choices that are necessary to bring spending under control.”
