Miller Statement in Remembrance of 69th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement in remembrance of the 69th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor:

“Today, we join together to recognize that 69 years ago, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into World War II.  What happened changed the course of history forever.   More than 400,000 Americans lost their lives protecting our freedom and way of life, and with the help of our allies, we defeated the Nazi and Japanese forces.  Today and always we remember the enormous cost of liberty.

“In the wake of Pearl Harbor, Japanese Admiral Yamamoto famously predicted: ‘I fear all we have done is awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.’  He could not have been more correct. President Roosevelt famously referred to Detroit as, ‘The Arsenal of Democracy,’ and that’s a title those of us from Southeast Michigan are proud of.   From the Willow Run plant pumping out a B-24 Bomber every hour, to the Detroit Tank Arsenal in Warren churning out more than 20,000 tanks, we went from putting the world on wheels to arming our soldiers and playing a critical role in the victory effort.   To our veterans and those who contributed back home, we thank you.”
