Harrison Township, MI – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today released the following statement in reaction to President Obama’s appointment of John Goss as the Administration’s Asian carp Czar:
“Many of us here in Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes states have been pushing for urgent action to stop the Asian carp from entering the lakes. It is more apparent that time is running short to take decisive action with the recent discovery of a live Asian carp above the electronic barrier on the Chicago Diversionary Canal. I am hopeful that John Goss will agree with those of us who understand the threat Asian carp pose to our Great Lakes and will advocate for the needed steps to protect them.
“I am disappointed that President Obama did not choose someone from Michigan to lead this effort as our state would be most negatively effected if the Asian carp reach the Great Lakes. Mr. Goss is from Indiana, a state which has not joined our effort to get the locks on the Chicago Diversionary Canal closed – the only Great Lakes state other than Illinois that has not joined our effort. I am also concerned that he has not joined we who believe that there must be a permanent separation between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Mr. Goss must understand that we in Michigan and other Great Lakes states will not tolerate delays and study after study before decisive action is taken. The time to act is now.”
