Miller Statement on the Passing of Ernie Harwell

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today issued the following statement on the passing of Ernie Harwell:

“For generations of Tigers fans Ernie Harwell was the voice of summer. Day after day, and year after year, that wonderful southern gentleman who we heard on our radios made every baseball season wonderful, regardless of the number of Tigers wins and losses. The loss of Ernie Harwell for Tigers fans is immense, but it is even a greater loss for our entire community. Ernie Harwell personified integrity, generosity, courtesy, honor and class. As a young man he served our nation in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. For 68 years he shared his life with his beloved wife Lulu. For more than 40 years his voice was a welcome friend on our radios. Throughout his life his charitable acts and gentle kindness made him a beloved figure for all, baseball fan or not. Our hearts go out to Lulu Harwell for her great loss. She also gets our thanks for sharing the man who she loved, and who we all came to love, for these many years.

“Rest in peace, Ernie.”
