WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today issued the following statement upon the introduction of America Speaking Out, an effort by House Republicans to engage the American people in the process of building a new policy agenda for America. Through America Speaking Out, the American people will be given a voice in setting the priorities for a national agenda. “In my 30 years of public service I have never seen people so agitated, so intensely frustrated with the federal government. Folks feel that we are going in the wrong direction, that spending is out-of-control, that Washington isn’t focusing on priorities like the economy and jobs, and a deficit that is so big hardly anyone can even get their minds around the numbers anymore. The number one thing that I hear over and over is, ‘Why isn’t Washington listening?’
“Americans are more tuned in today than they have been in a long time – they’re engaged, they’re following the debates. We’ve heard them expressing their opposition and frustration at 2,000 page bills, developed in secrecy, in a backroom, and all they know is that they will have to pay for it all.
“People have seen the governance style of the Democrats. Their agenda is not supported by a majority of Americans. They have developed, and are implementing their agenda without input from others. That is why House Republicans want to further engage the inherent good common sense of the American people.
“This initiative is about a governance agenda for today, because urgency is required and we can use the good input from the American people immediately and as this year continues. This will be an American agenda with direct involvement of the American people who in the year 2010 continue to petition the government for redress of their grievances as granted and guaranteed by the 1st amendment of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights. America Speaking Out will use today’s technology as another venue for them to do so.”
