Attempted New York City Terrorists Must Be Treated as Unlawful Enemy Combatants

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today released the following statement regarding the attempted terrorist attack in New York City:

“The attempted terrorist attack in New York City’s Times Square is just another reminder that there are those who continue to seek to attack innocent Americans. We all owe a debt of thanks to those citizens who quickly realized that something was wrong and for law enforcement in New York for taking quick action to prevent harm.

“Those who sought to carry out this attack remain at large and I have great confidence in the ability of local counter terrorism officials in New York and the FBI to work with the public to find these terrorists.

“Members of the Taliban in Pakistan have taken responsibility for this attempted attack, although some have discounted their claim. It is my hope that we will have learned a lesson from the Christmas Day attack on Northwest flight 253 over Detroit, and when those who attempted to carry out this attack are caught that they are not immediately given the right to remain silent. They should and must be treated as unlawful enemy combatants and interrogated with the harshest techniques that this Administration will allow to determine if there is a foreign involvement and if this is part of broader effort to attack innocent Americans.”

Miller is Michigan’s only member of the House Homeland Security Committee. She is also a member of the House Republicans National Security Solutions Group which will advocate and develop better solutions to the national security challenges our nation faces and will hold the Obama Administration accountable when it pursues misguided policies that make the American people less safe.
