WASHINGTON – U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10), a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, today released the following statement in response to President Obama’s issuance of the Nuclear Policy Review:
“We live in a dangerous world and there are many state and non-state actors that may have intentions to attack our nation. Since World War II, our nuclear deterrent has helped to preserve the safety and security of the American people and our allies. The policy of strategic ambiguity, where we do not let enemies of the United States or our allies know when we might use that deterrent in our own defense, has been followed by every president from Dwight Eisenhower to John Kennedy to Ronald Reagan up until this very day. And it has worked.
“President Obama’s announcement yesterday does nothing to improve the safety and security of our nation. It is simply astounding that the President would inform enemies of America that even if they attack our nation with chemical or biological weapons they would not face a nuclear response as long as they were in compliance with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
“Our nation’s nuclear deterrent works. It has saved lives and prevented war. I fully support the effort to stop the spread of nuclear weapons to rogue states like Iran or North Korea, but I do not believe we will achieve that goal by weakening our own defense or telegraphing our responses to potential adversaries. Our past policy has worked well for our nation and our allies and I urge President Obama to reconsider this dangerous decision.”
