Port Huron, MI – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) will attend the opening of the 7th Street Bridge in Port Huron on Monday, January 18th at 10:30 AM. Originally opened in July of 1932, the 7th Street bridge crosses over the Black River in Port Huron and allows north and south movement of traffic across the river. The new 114-foot span bridge features a crossing that includes a separate 8-foot pedestrian and bicycle path, and Rep. Miller helped secured $500,000 in funding for construct costs.
"The 7th Street Bridge has long played an important role in helping people move throughout Port Huron. This bridge was originally opened in 1932, and it is the only single-leaf bascule bridge in our state. Although it has undergone several renovations over the years, the historical characteristics of the bridge have stood the test of time.
“I am delighted to celebrate the 7th Street Bridge opening, which is a critical transportation artery in the area,” Rep. Miller said. “The City of Port Huron and its residents have waited almost two and a half years for this bridge to reopen, and I am pleased to join with Senator Levin and the city to fund this much needed renovation. I know this new bridge will serve the community well for many years to come.”
The 7th Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Construction on the bridge began in late July of 2007 and the bridge was open to traffic on December 18, 2009.
