Harrison Township, MI - U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today issued the following statement in response to the Obama Administration’s opposition to closing the Chicago-area locks and waterways, which will potentially allow Asian carp to enter the Great Lakes.
Representative Miller said:
“Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox’s lawsuit to permanently close Chicago area locks to keep the Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes is a vital step in the right direction to protect the health of one of our nation’s greatest natural treasures. A bi-partisan group of Great Lakes Attorneys General from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, New York and the Environment Minister of Ontario have all signed on to this effort. They have done so because they understand that allowing the Asian carp to enter the Great Lakes will cause irreparable harm to the ecosystem and devastate the economy of the Great Lakes region.
“It is inexcusable that the Administration has decided to side with their political allies in the state of Illinois to protect the narrow interests of their state, while the rest of the Great Lakes Region and federal taxpayers will be forced to deal with the consequences of Asian carp entering the lakes. I urge the President to reconsider his Administration’s opposition to closing the locks so that we can make every effort to protect the Great Lakes from the threat posed by the Asian carp.”
