WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded $190,000 to the Memphis Fire Department. This grant is part of the 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program and is intended to support first responder training, supply adequate firefighting/EMS equipment, including rescue vehicles and protective gear, as well as provide for the wellness and fitness of firefighters. Specifically, this grant will enable the Memphis Fire Department to purchase a new Pumper/Tanker Fire Truck.
“The AFG grant is terrific news for this department in Memphis who serves the communities of the City of Memphis, and the Townships of Columbus, Richmond, Riley and Wales. The continued financial support for the men and women who voluntarily serve thousands of residents will aid in the life and property protection services which keep our communities safe,” said Rep. Miller. “Safety is a top priority for this community department and this grant will help each first responder meet their mission.”
“This $190,000 Homeland Security grant will help the Memphis Fire Department replace our existing 20 year old fire apparatus enabling us to better protect our community, as well as our first responders that utilize this equipment. The changes in vehicle safety standards, as well as technology in the fire service over the last 20 years, has truly made significant progress forward and this grant will assist our fire department in keeping up to date with those standards and providing the best possible protection for our residents now and in the future,” said Fire Chief W. Tim Franz.
