Miller: Democrat Congressional Leaders Must Honor President Obama's Promise of Transparency and End Back-Room Secrecy and Vote Buying

Harrison Township, MI - U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) today issued the following statement reiterating her opposition to the closed-door negotiations on the health care reform bills passed in the House and Senate. Rep. Miller also urges support for C-SPAN’s requests to allow all future health care negotiations be open to the public through media coverage:

Representative Miller said:

“During his campaign, President Obama promised that all negotiations on health care would be open, transparent and even broadcast live on C-SPAN. Now Speaker Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democrats in Congress are meeting behind closed doors to draft the final plan for our nation’s health care reform while locking out Republicans and the American people from the process. The American people were promised transparency and all they are getting is a view of a closed and locked door.

“Those who run C-SPAN have made a formal request for access to the negotiations so that the American people can receive the transparency they were promised. Ignoring that request would be reprehensible. The American people will not accept a continuation of back-room deals to buy votes on an issue that so profoundly affects the lives of every citizen. The American people were promised transparency and now it is time for President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid to deliver on that promise. The American people deserve nothing less.”
