WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (MI-10) today voted in favor of an amendment to H.R. 3183, the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2010 that requires that any vehicle purchased the federal government be manufactured by Ford, GM or Chrysler. Miller cited the importance of ensuring that American tax dollars are going to support American jobs and our domestic auto industry.
“If we are to strengthen our auto industry and protect American jobs it is vital that when the federal government uses American taxpayer dollars to purchases new vehicles that only American vehicles are bought,” said Miller. “The provision included in this legislation will ensure that every American taxpayer dollar used to buy vehicles will buy those built by Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.”
The amendment to the larger spending bill was introduced by Congressman Ed Pastor (D-AZ) and passed the House by a vote of 261 – 172. Miller said that all too often those in Washington lose sight of the importance of supporting American industry and American jobs. The vote today was an important step in the right direction.
“When I am in Washington I am constantly dismayed that I see so many foreign cars on the road, but this measure means that at least our federal government is starting to get the message,” said Miller. “American taxpayers can now be certain that their tax dollars will be spent to support the domestic auto industry and the countless jobs that dependent on this vital industry.”
