Rep. Miller's Statement Commemorating D-Day

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Candice Miller (MI-10) today made the following statement on the 65th Anniversary of D-Day:

“As we commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day, it is a time to reflect on the extraordinary heroism and bravery American troops displayed that June day in 1944 that freed a continent and saved the world from tyranny.  Today, sixty five years later, this nation remains eternally grateful to those brave young men who risked everything and, in many cases, paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“Under General Eisenhower’s command, our military, along with Great Britain and Canada, launched the largest amphibious assault in history, landing by sea, land and air on five beaches of France to free Nazi-occupied Europe.  Our troops knew what they would face that day.  They knew that they would advance on a beach aligned with steep cliffs fortified with Germany’s best gunners.  Yet they put aside the instinct of self preservation and stormed that beach, stepping off carriers into a sea of oncoming bullets, many watching as those before them fell from enemy fire.

“Their actions that day changed the course of the war, and led to the defeat of one of the greatest evils our world has ever known.  We are free today because of their uncommon valor.  And though we can never truly repay them, we will never forget them.  And to those young men who gave their lives for our freedom on those beaches in June of 1944, may we endeavor to always hold true to the principles for which they made the ultimate sacrifice.  On this 65th anniversary, a grateful nation, humbled deeply by their courage, says thank you.”
